The book to the Ergomechanics Congress 2005
Prof. Dr. Hans-Joachim Wilke (editor)
Ergomechanics 2 – 2nd Interdisciplinary Conference on Spinal Column Research
In accordance to the 1st Interdisciplinary Conference of Spinal Column Research prominent and important researchers in this field took part once again at the 2nd Interdisciplinary Conference on Spinal Column Research.
Taken from the foreword of Prof. Dr. med Jürgen Krämer, Director of Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Bochum:
„Once again, Prof. Dr. Hans-Joachim Wilke was able to attract well-known scientists for this interdisciplinary conference concerning spine research. It was unique to have such a diverse group of experts from the fields of Ergonomics, Biomechanics and Biology discussing the spine. In addition to proven and accepted basic science research, novel approaches and new aspects in spine research were reported. Among other things, the use of vertical positional magnetic resonance imaging and the European research project EURODISC were presented. The editor deserves credit for bringing together basic research knowledge and making it available by translating the work into German and English.
Through the combination of ergonomics and biomechanics, scientists can better understand the basis for diagnosis, therapy and prevention of degenerative spinal diseases. For that reason, this interdisciplinary conference and publication concerning spine research will be of great value for all active professional physicians, physiotherapists and ergonomists working in this area. Only through such an exchange between the different disciplines will it be possible to foster the acquired basic knowledge and progress for the treatment and prevention of back pain.“
The book to the Ergomechanics Congress 2001

Ergomechanics - interdisciplinary congress on spinal column research
ergomechanics, the neologism created out of the words ergonomics and biomechanics, stands for the knowledge exchange between these two disciplines regarding spinal column load, in particular in sitting. ergomechanics is also the title of the first interdisciplinary congress on spinal column research, organized in 2001 by Grammer AG, Amberg and Sato Office GmbH (former SID Seating GmbH), Ebermannsdorf. Its expert contributions are published in this book.
„In this book one finds a unique composition of overviews and original work from different fields concerning the topics biomechanics and ergonomics of the spinal column.
So far questions, e.g. regarding sitting, operational stabilization of the spinal column and regarding prevention of back pain were only discussed by one or two specialist areas. The publisher of this book succeeded in winning considerable authors for the writing of overviews from their respective specialist areas. Basic research and clinical experiences result in a meaningful Synopsis for the load of the spinal column in sitting, standing or with physical activities and after fusion operations.
The intradiscal pressure measurements of Professor Dr. Wilke are a substantial basis for newer opinions regarding the load of the spinal column under different biomechanical conditions.
This book is of importance for orthopedists, biomechanics, ergonomists, company physicians and physiotherapists.“ From the preface of Porf. Dr. med. Jürgen Krämer, director of the Orthopedic University Clinic Bochum.
